ChatGPT Ads in India 2026: Cost & Setup Guide

ChatGPT Ads in India 2026: Cost & Setup Guide

ChatGPT Ads are live in India. Real 2026 costs, how the auction works, what to build before you launch, and how Mumbai brands should test the channel.

Methodology & local context

This playbook is based on Stalite Media's founder-led work with Mumbai brands, local campaign audits and website builds from our Oshiwara office. Any benchmark ranges are planning guidance, not guaranteed outcomes.

ChatGPT Ads are no longer an American experiment. OpenAI began showing ads to Free and Go tier users in the US on 9 February 2026, opened a self-serve Ads Manager at ads.openai.com on 5 May 2026 with no minimum spend, and rolled the channel out to India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa in the first week of September 2026. For the first time since Meta Ads matured, Indian advertisers have a genuinely new intent surface to buy - and almost nobody in Mumbai has a tested playbook for it yet. Stalite Media runs performance marketing from Office No. 305, Reliable Business Centre, Oshiwara, Andheri West, and this is the exact framework we use when a client asks whether to put budget into ChatGPT.

What a ChatGPT ad actually is

Forget the mental model of a search ad. There is no keyword, no ad rank quality score you can game with exact match, and no demographic targeting. The current format is a sponsored card that appears below the assistant's answer when the conversation is commercially relevant - a logo, a headline of roughly 40 characters, a description of up to about 150 characters, an image and a destination link. OpenAI matches it using conversational context signals plus the context hints you supply at ad-group level, and it publicly commits that ads never influence the answer above them.

  • Who sees them: logged-in adult users on Free and the low-cost Go tier. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education subscribers never see ads - so this channel skews mass-market, not CXO.
  • How you buy: CPM or CPC bidding through a relevance-weighted second-price auction. Creative quality affects ranking, so a sharper card can win the slot at a lower bid.
  • How you measure: the OAIQ pixel for browser events and the OpenAI Conversions API for server-side events, both live since May 2026.
  • What you cannot do: exact-match keywords, age/gender targeting, or lookalike audiences. Geo targeting works at country and region level.
  • Restricted categories: gambling and betting are disallowed, and several regulated verticals including parts of health and finance carry extra limits. Check policy before you build creative.

What ChatGPT Ads cost in 2026

Benchmark ChatGPT Ads pricing through 2026. Indian CPMs run below US rates; treat these as planning ranges, not guarantees.
PhaseEntry requirementPricing
Feb 2026 pilot (US)Invite + ~$200,000 commitmentCPM only, around $60
Apr 2026 beta$50,000 minimumCPC introduced, roughly $3-$5 floors by category
May 2026 self-serveNo minimum spendCPM around $25, CPC bidding open
Sep 2026 India rolloutNo minimum spendEarly Indian CPMs typically land well under US levels - budget ₹300-₹900 CPM and ₹25-₹90 CPC while the auction is thin

The genuinely interesting number is engagement, not price. Criteo reported click-through rates roughly three times higher than comparable formats elsewhere for the 1,000+ brands running early campaigns. That is what an uncrowded auction looks like. It will not last, which is precisely the argument for testing now with a small, well-tracked budget rather than waiting until CPMs normalise.

Every new ad channel has a window where attention is underpriced. Meta had it in 2014, Reels had it in 2021. ChatGPT Ads are in that window right now - and windows close fastest for the people who waited for a case study.

Build these five things before you spend a rupee

  • Server-side tracking: install the OAIQ pixel and wire the OpenAI Conversions API the same way you would Meta CAPI. Browser-only measurement under-reports and you will wrongly kill a working campaign.
  • A landing page that loads in under 2 seconds: ChatGPT traffic arrives mid-research with high intent and zero patience. We ship 95+ PageSpeed pages for exactly this reason - a slow page doubles your effective CPL on any channel, and it is brutal here.
  • Answer-shaped copy: the user just read a helpful paragraph. Your card has to read like the logical next step, not an interruption. Lead with the specific outcome, not the brand name.
  • Context hints, written like a brief: you are describing the conversations you want to appear in, not stuffing keywords. Write them as plain intent statements - 'comparing CRM tools for a small services business' - and iterate weekly.
  • A separate reporting line: never blend ChatGPT into a 'paid social' bucket. It behaves like high-intent research traffic with a longer consideration lag. Give it its own view and a 14-30 day lookback.

Who should test ChatGPT Ads from Mumbai - and who should wait

How we structure a first ChatGPT Ads test

We run a 30-day pilot at ₹40,000-₹75,000 of media, ring-fenced from your Google and Meta budgets so nothing existing gets starved. Week 1: CPM buying with four card variants against two context-hint themes, purely to learn which conversation types convert. Week 2: cut to the two winning themes and switch the stronger one to CPC. Weeks 3-4: scale the winner, add a retargeting layer on Meta for everyone who landed from ChatGPT and did not convert - that audience is the cheapest high-intent pool you will build this quarter. We report incremental CPL against your existing blended CPL, and if it does not beat the blend by day 30, we say so and stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ChatGPT Ads available in India?

Yes. OpenAI began rolling ChatGPT Ads out to select countries in Europe, India, the Middle East and North Africa in the first week of September 2026, after launching in the US on 9 February 2026 and opening self-serve buying on 5 May 2026. Indian advertisers can create an account at ads.openai.com with business details, a tax ID and a landing page.

How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?

The pilot started around a $60 CPM with a $200,000 commitment. After self-serve opened in May 2026 the minimum was removed and CPMs settled near $25 in the US, with CPC floors roughly $3-$5 by category. Indian inventory prices lower - budget ₹300-₹900 CPM and ₹25-₹90 CPC as a planning range and expect it to rise as more advertisers enter.

Can I target keywords or locations like Andheri West on ChatGPT Ads?

No. ChatGPT Ads use conversational context signals and advertiser-supplied context hints instead of exact-match keywords, and there is no demographic targeting. Geo targeting is country or region level, so a 3km radius around Oshiwara is not buyable yet. Hyperlocal Mumbai businesses should stay on Google Ads and Meta for now.

Do ChatGPT Ads influence what ChatGPT says about my brand?

No. OpenAI states that ads run on separate systems from the model, are clearly labelled, appear below the answer, and cannot shape, rank or alter responses. Getting mentioned inside the answer itself is a generative engine optimisation problem - content, structure and citations - not something you can buy.

Should I move budget from Meta Ads to ChatGPT Ads?

Not yet. Treat ChatGPT as an incremental test funded with 5-10% of your monthly media, not a replacement. Meta and Google still carry volume and precise geo targeting. The reason to test now is that click-through rates are running roughly 3x comparable formats while the auction is uncrowded - that advantage decays as more advertisers join.
